To send your initial DM on Instagram, take a photo as you generally would. You can apply all the same filters to "DM photos" as you can with all other Instagram messages. When you're ready to send it straight to a person (or a group of individuals)-- tap NEXT as usual.
From the Share to menu towards the top of the display, tap DIRECT (see # 1 in screenshot below). Now tap inside the Write a caption ... window, as well as type out your message (see # 2 in screenshot below).
